I write further to my acknowledgement of your email dated 28 May 2023 addressed to our Chief Executive, Helen Stephenson, and our Chair, Orlando Fraser. In your email, you ask whether the 7 Principles of Public Life apply to Citizens Advice, and you provide copies of various correspondence you have had with their representatives. You also ask similar questions in relation to the role of the Charity Commission Chair and CEO.

We are not commenting on the questions you have raised in relation to Citizens Advice, or those related to the Chair and CEO, but it may be helpful for me to explain the Charity Commission’s (“the Commission”) role:

The Commission is the independent regulator of charities, and its job is to ensure that charities are accountable, well run, and meet their legal obligations. We do this in several ways, including providing advice and guidance, and intervening and acting where it is evidence based and proportionate for us to do so. We do not function as an ombudsman or a complaints service and when an individual raises a concern, we assess and identify whether there is a regulatory issue or concern that requires our involvement.
